The handicraft industry is booming, but there’s still a lot of work to do. There are many people who want to help cultivate our local economy by supporting small businesses. But how? What can be done to make sure that local artisans have a place at the table?
Local Artisans are those who create their products and services using locally sourced materials (such as food, clothing, etc.) and are based in their communities. In some communities, they account for nearly half of total jobs! When we talk about “local” here, we mean our neighbors, our friends, and our families.
Small business owners often operate out of necessity. Their families rely on them and they depend on the community for their livelihood. Many of these businesses are family-owned and operated; others are run by individuals who have lived in the area for years.
In Rajasthan alone, there are over 2,500 small businesses that provide goods and/or services to residents. These businesses employ thousands of workers and generate hundreds of crores in revenue annually.
But, even though small businesses are thriving, the majority of consumers don't know that they exist. According to the Small Business Administration, only 8% of customers consider themselves likely to patronize a small business. So what can we do to ensure that the great things happening in our communities get the attention they deserve?
You can start by choosing to shop at local stores. You can learn to become a conscious consumer by reading labels and asking questions before making purchases. And you can encourage your friends and family members to do the same. Small businesses are not just a thing of the past—they're here today and tomorrow. We need to continue to support them.
